You're Welcome. So prophetic...almost as if James Gunn knew what he had before he even finished editing. Gunn knew that this was the film we needed as MARVEL celebrated it's "10th" birthday with GUARDIANS. I have seen the film 4 times now, falling more in love with it every time. I had planned to just flat out write a love letter to the film but I decided to give any potential future readers 10 solid reasons why it's awesome, why you should see it and why it was the movie we needed. Now of course it's not a flawless movie but I'm hard pressed to come up with a 'flawless' movie. Even the vaunted AVENGERS isn't with out issues.
1. ITS DIFFERENT
A good different. It isn't your typical superhero film...it doesn't isolate or alienate any particular demographic. Whether you are 6 or 60 this movie has something for you. Male or female- there is enough appealing elements for either gender. Its slaps you in the face with a colorful blend of CGI and practicality, a score that effortlessly moves in sync with the film, a core soundtrack of funky catchy songs that never get old...
2. ITS A VACATION
The Pina' Colada song encapsulates this movie so appropriately - "come with me and escape..." James Gunn asks you to sit back and escape into a new world, new creatures, new adventures. As soon as young Quill is taken from Earth in 1988 the film basically lets you know and invites you to leave Earth, leave your work troubles, real world problems...leave whatever you got going on and escape with Peter Quill. When it is all said and done James Gunn has just given you a 2 hour vacation from the norm...from the mundane.
3. ITS CHARMING WITH A TON OF HEART
Rocket, Groot, Drax, Gamora and Star Lord....you want to take an adventure with these people! by the time they saddle up at the end off to find new adventures you want to join them! you want to buckle up and hang out with them and listen to Peter's "Awesome Mix"
Gamora towards the end embraces the urge to dance
Drax begins to understand what a metaphor is
Groot - so many moments but the big one ? Groot lays waste to a bunch of Ronin's lackeys VIOLENTLY...wham bam wham bam and then turns to the camera and it's just the most adorable smile EVER!
Rocket- Also so many moments but the big one ? "Ok so I'm standing...happy? I'm standing...we're all standing in a circle...like a jackasses"
Peter- ton of moments but the subtle one was where he assured Rhoman Dey (John C Reilly) that he would take care of and watch over the other guys...almost with this big brother vibe. He found a new family- something he was always missing having been taken from Earth as a child...but the "dance off" will go down as one of the best moments in history.
4. ITS NOT CONVENTIONAL, TYPICAL OR SAME OLD SAME OLD
At every moment where you think "oh here we go I have seen this is fifty other superhero movies..." James Gunn turns the moment to catch you off guard. It was a magic act and I fully appreciate the effort. Want an example? Remember when Peter saved Gamora and then she asked him why he did it ? Immediately a small part of the comic book movie nerd recognizes where it's going- MAN OF STEEL forced kiss between Superman and Lois. THOR forced kiss between Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth.... IN GUARDIANS ? Peter takes his hero speech too far, Gamora rolls her eyes, audience laughs and smiles and we are spared the uncomfortable movie speed bump kiss between lead characters. Another great example : Rocket....just Rocket. The Collector is telling this grand story of powerful stones and Celestials and Thanos and then " BLAH BLAH BLAH who gives a shit give us our money!" Rocket IS US. He is the audience- he says what we are thinking in situations that seem farfetched and ridiculous.
5. ITS TIMELESS
You don't feel time moving...you don't shift your ass in the seat, you don't feel compelled to check your Facebook updates or your Twitter. Children ! I have seen the film just capture a child's attention in a world where it's tough to get a kid to sit for 20 minutes let alone 2 hours. Also it's TIMELESS because its a Space Epic, a well crafted Space Epic invoking memories of the first Star Wars. You can watch GUARDIANS over and over and it won't become dated or obsolete. Thematically it will hold, the characters will still make you smile and giggle and give you the warm and fuzzies.
Alright so this is kind of a love letter. See the movie. Take the kids. Buy the BluRay. and more importantly wish MARVEL a HAPPY 10th "Birthday" and send a HUGE THANK YOU to JAMES GUNN and the cast and crew of GUARDIANS....even if you don't...they already said "YOU'RE WELCOME" :)
